A DEDICATED Rubery grandmother who has looked after a village church for 25 years is celebrating her achievement.
Hilda Hart, caretaker at Beacon Church Centre, in Whetty Lane, has organised a barn dance for family and friends at the venue which has become a major part of her life.
She and husband Ray were married there 26 years ago and their son, Andrew, and granddaughter, Emily, have both been christened at the church.
The couple were avid church-goers and when the job for caretaker came up Hilda grabbed it with both hands.
The pair have lived next door to the centre since taking on the responsibility which includes opening and closing it down before and after events.
Hilda has been called on at all hours of the night on church matters and is an information point for matters of local interest.
She said: "The church is like a family which I love being a part of.
"I will be lost when I retire in a couple of years but I will still be involved in the church.
"I have really enjoyed my time as caretaker and our home is handy for social events because it's only next door."
Ray, who helps Hilda in her duties, said: "It is a 24 hours a day job and has been a major part of her life. Everyone knows her.
"She has arthritis but will carry on for as long as she can."
The barn dance and buffet will take place on Saturday March 3 from 4.30pm until 9.30pm.
