Mr Adams, this is a bridge too far-fetched

From the archive, first published Monday 26th Feb 2001.

TORY parliamentary candidate Richard Adam's electioneering stunts really are highlighting his ignorance about Worcester.

And parading around with MEPs and shadow ministers who reiterate anything he says is farcical.

A new bridge from west of the city to the heart of the town will bring more chaos than ever.

It would put a planning blight on large areas of the Arboretum and St John's where domestic and business properties would be threatened with demolition. He calls for dredging under the bridge because the bridge is a dam - what on earth is this?

Is he also proposing to demolish the bridge we do have? Poorly-informed and hopelessly advised, Mr Adams has missed it again - the difference in river levels one side of the bridge to the other was caused by debris building up.

If you released that it would certainly reduce the levels north and increase the levels to the south.

This would have the effect of exacerbating problems in areas such as Waverley Street where residents have suffered recently.

Perhaps Mr Adams would be better advised by putting pressure on Severn Trent - but don't upset the shareholders!

COUN RICHARD BIRD,

Worcester.
