Top village green setting

ELMLEY CASTLE v BARNARDS GREEN II

FOR the last Saturday game of the season, the Green seconds travelled to the ultimate village green setting of Elmley Castle.

After struggling to round up a full team, the Green travelled with ten players including teenage debutants Chris Freeman and Chris Bridges.

The Green were asked to bat first on a damp green wicket, Steve Freeman and Tom Clack started in positive manner putting on 71 in 17 overs when Clack (36) was caught going for another big drive.

Richard Brown (snr) struck a boundary then perished the next delivery, Jon Lewis striking eight 4s and a 6 in his 55 before he was caught going for another big shot. Andy Wheeler went first ball spooning the ball to the keeper, Sam Beaumont joined Steve Freeman, who went on to complete his half-century, Sam Beaumont struck a quick fire 18 before being bowled.

Young Chris Bridges was unbeaten on five, Steve Freeman perished for a well crafted 66, leaving the Green 217-7 off their 40 overs.

In reply, the home side got off to a flyer with Simon Corbett and Woodford putting on 88 for the first wicket in 16 overs, Woodford falling to the off-spin of Jon Lewis for 28. Tom Clack and Phil Spencer pegged back the home scoring, Corbett was bowled by Spencer for a fine 77.

Skipper Eaton was adjudged LBW by the pace of Jack Wheeler, he then had Swainson smartly stumped by Longmore, then Wheeler produced a fine piece of fielding to run-out Sheepy for 46, Dick Brown bowled four tight overs at the death.

Elmley needed 19 runs off the last over. Spencer bowled three dot balls leaving the Green winners by 15 runs.
