A CONSTRUCTION firm's good record in health and safety helped earn it an award in a prestigious annual competition.
Thomas Vale Construction, of Stourport, took the Silver Helmet for Health and Safety in the Contract Journal Awards ceremony, held in London in front of more than 1,600 people.
With a 100 per cent CSCS - Construction Skills Certification Scheme - carded workforce, Thomas Vale was ahead of many of the industry's major players, with an injury incident rate of 200 per 100,000 employees - a quarter of the national average.
It had also invested in several safety initiatives, including a Work Safe, Stay Safe campaign for employees and supply chain partners and its SPLAAT campaign, aimed at keeping children safe near construction sites, which had been delivered to 26,000 youngsters.
Tony Hyde, the firm's managing director, said: "Construction is the most dangerous sector to work in and is currently top of the HSE - Health and Safety Executive - agenda, who are giving it considerable focus to ensure major improvements.
"This award clearly recognises Thomas Vale's commitment and the significant role our site managers, health and safety managers and site teams are making.
"However, this clearly sets the standard now and we need to take it to a higher level for the continued protection of employees and clients who need to take responsibility to ensure the competence of the contractors that they choose."
Thomas Vale also played a part in the Long-term Partnering Award that went to Birmingham Construction Partnership - BCP - for the second year running.
