HALLOW WI

From the Worcester News, first published Tuesday 10th Jul 2007.

THE meeting this month welcomed sculptor John Lett.

John is a very unassuming, charming, funny gentleman with a wonderful talent and who assured us that by the end of this demonstration/lesson he would have taught us all how to sculpt. He says it is easy - but I really don't believe that any of us could produce the head of a Scottish shepherd, complete with full beard and tam-o-shanter, which he managed to do in just 40 minutes.

John told us that he has had a love affair with clay since he was a young man at art college and it showed in the way he deftly rolled and shaped chunks of clay and stuck them on to a base.

In 1995 he was commissioned to produce a study of the Queen for a hospital in Nuneaton. He went to Buckingham Palace where he spent about six hours alone with the Queen and he found her to be very chatty.

From looking at the photos of his work it is clear that he is a great sculptor and his work is in great demand from every imaginable source.

Some of the activities we can look forward to over the coming months include hosting the Shrawley Cup which will include a treasure hunt around Hallow with supper, a kurling evening with nibbles, a progressive supper which promises to be superb, knowing the culinary expertise of our members, and a visit to our twinned WI in Gotherington for a pudding tasting evening.
